The Olympic and Paralympic Games

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

14th August 2012

The Olympics is over and the Paralympic Games will soon begin. My kids and I had a lot of fun during The Olympics, living in Greenwich and my studio in Woolwich we felt like we were in the hub of it all.

We watched the races on the Big Screen in Blackheath, had a neighbors Olympic BBQ in our garden and because my daughter was dancing in the Closing Ceremony she was given 2 tickets to the dress rehearsal of the Opening Ceremony, so we had a great evening in the Olympic park. Here’s some quick snaps, taken along the way. I am continuing to prepare for my exhibition opening 13 September.

Yolande Yorke-Edgell rehearses

Sunday, June 10th, 2012

8th June 2012

Yorke Dance Project are rehearsing for their new 2012 tour, Words Worth. Each dance in the programme is inspired by words, in the form of songs, letters or text from books.

Artistic Director and Choreographer of the company,  Yolande Yorke-Edgell will perform a solo inspired by a letter written by Marilyn Monroe in 1961 to her psychiatrist following her being committed to a psychiatric clinic in new York (by another psychiatrist). The letter is very moving and this is conveyed in the choreography. I joined Yolande at Dance Attic Studios to draw her while she rehearsed.

I am about to begin a life size wire sculpture of Yolande dancing Marilyn. I will show the sculpture on the first night of my show in September after which it will go on tour with the company to be on stage with Yolande Yorke-Edgell while she performs the dance.

In several weeks I am looking forward to returning to draw Yorke Dance Project’s special guest Strictly Come Dancing’s Anton Du Beke choreographing a dance for the tour, so look out for my drawings of ballroom dancing.

English National Ballet at Tate Britain

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Exhibition Picasso & Modern British Art opened at Tate Britain on 15th February. The exhibition explores Picasso’s connections with Britain, not only do you see work by Picasso but paintings by British artists for example Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and David Hockney, demonstrating the influence Picasso’s work had on them.

English National Ballet took up residence at Tate Britain for a week. A raised stage was placed in the Duveen gallery, each day began with morning class on the stage followed by rehearsals and discussions, culminating in performances on Friday of 3 new commissions inspired by Picasso’s collaborations with the Ballets Russes.

I joined the dancers to draw them in class and rehearsal.
