Sunset, Thames Barrier Print Studio

3 November 2014

At about 4.30 this afternoon, this was the view from the window of the studio where I do my printing at Thames Barrier Print Studio. I was working on 2 new plates today, it wasn’t going too well I left one of the plates in the acid too long and had some foul biting, then I saw this sunset and my spirits lifted.

My studio is Unit 0 Studio 17, 2 minutes walk from the Print Studio. The majority of the artists with studios on the complex, including me, will open their doors for the

Etching: Ordinary Courage

Etching: Ordinary Courage

Theo Clinkard was invited to present the emotionally charged Ordinary Couragea dance concerned with loss and inspired by the death of his mother, at The Danzalborde Festival in Valparaiso and at GAM in Santiago, Chille. Theo needed to raise £5000 to get the 6 dancers and musician to South America. Undaunted, Theo started a crowd-funding campaign, met their target in time and is now back in the UK.

This 2 plate etching was made after drawing the dance at the beginning of the year. The etching wasn’t working and I felt lost with it and put the plates to one side. Recently I began to work on it again, I cut the plates down to create a smaller more intimate space, then to tried the addition of chine collé, here is the result

Ordinary Courage.

Theo and I are both Resident Artists at Greenwich Dance.

This will be  in the Greenwich Printmakers next exhibition, opening 11th November – Sunday 4th January, as well as in my Open Studio 15 – 16th November

Return to Harrods Fine Watch Room

Monday, September 15th, 2014

15 September 2014

Baume & Mercier Sculpture Commission. The sculpture is displayed in a special Promesse exhibition in the Fine Watch Room on the Ground Floor at Harrods during the month of September.

Today I returned to Harrods Fine Watch Room to see my most recent sculpture commissioned by Baume & Mercier to celebrate the launch of their new ladies collection, Promesse. On my first visit I was told that it was a marketing success and again this time was told how well it is being received. The sculpture surface is now full of padlocks, many with personal messages written on. Although the padlocks have now run out I am told there are more on the way. Behind the sculpture there is a interview with me filmed in my studio while I’m working on the sculpture.

Years ago when I was an art student at Goldsmiths College I worked in Harrods during the summer sales in the china department. As the doors opened to the public on the first day of the sales we were told to be still and listen, a distant rumble became a deafening roar, it was the pounding of hundreds of feet and they all seemed to be coming our way: the Summer Sales had begun! An enjoyable time, I made lasting friendships earning enough to pay my student rent and take a great holiday on a Greek Island with 9 others.

Foundation Year Show at UCA Canterbury

Saturday, May 31st, 2014

31 May 2014

My son Maxim McKay-Jones has completed his Fine Art Foundation Year at UCA Canterbury. The private view for this excellent show and all the graduation shows at UCA Canterbury was on Friday evening, featuring Fine Art, Design, Architecture and Media. The exhibition is open until 13th June and if you’re in the area I would urge to visit and see the exceptional talent displayed at the University for the Creative Arts Canterbury.

Here’s some of my son’s work concerned with geometric forms taking inspiration from his love of Maths
